Zumba is a fun way to lose weight and learn how to dance.

The dance came about after a trainer forgot his original track for an aerobic dance class.  He improvised by using whatever music he had in his backpack, which happened to be salsa at the time. His class enjoyed the exercise and the music, and it was named “Zumba”.

Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance-fitness workout program that now comes in a Wii and Kinect game, so a live instructor in a real class is no longer needed if there is a lack of transportation or time to drive to a gym. With the games, a virtual instructor dances to the song, and the point is to mirror their movements.

Everyone is capable of doing Zumba. Carla, a Zumba instructor from Reading, said her classes range from eleven-year olds to seventy-year-olds.

Her students start off doing warm up exercises to stretch and get their heart rates up. The people attending the class then start dancing.

“If there is a new routine, I will break it down,” she states.

The class dances for an hour each session. These classes range from $8.00 to $10.00 in price depending on the location.

Zumba has been added to the FASD high school gym curriculum. The classes follow Zumba instructors on a DVD through a series of different styles of dancing. Some students enjoy having Zumba added to gym class.

“I had fun [doing Zumba in gym]. I would love to do Zumba again,” sophomore Elaine Huang states.

Some students have not accepted this new trend, however.

Sophomore Carly Gieringer believes there are better things to do than Zumba. Others feel like the only way Zumba fitness is effective is if the person doing the exercise knows how to move his or her body the right way.
