Course Description

This course offers an introduction to Journalism and how the reporting media functions and fails to function in the twentieth century. Course topics will include, but not be limited to, proper writing techniques, journalistic ethics, plagiarism, sensationalism, advertisements, subjectivity v. objectivity, formatting, and photojournalism. Students will also investigate extant examples of journalism via newspapers and magazines to uncover the elements of effective reporting. Emphasis will be placed on the function of journalistic integrity within a democratic society. In addition to the above instruction, students will be expected to assume an active role in the school newspaper, which includes writing, editing, formatting, and photographing for periodic publication.
