Fleetwood Fixing Football Fast

“With a few more in the loss column rather than the win column, I’d say it could be better,” says senior wide receiver Ryan Milloy. That is how he has described the Fleetwood High football team’s poor 0-5 start to the 2010 season. So far, this season has included tough and close losses in both of the first two games against Octorara and Donegal.

“I had great expectations coming into the season,” says Milloy.

But the losses didn’t stop there. Fleetwood has been blown out in each of its last three games against Annville-Cleona, Central Catholic, and Wyomissing. The schedule isn’t looking up either; Fleetwood plays football powerhouses Holy Name, Blue Mountain, and Hamburg in the following weeks.

“I am confident that they are giving their best effort at practices and games,” says Mr. DeAntonio, FAHS principal. “There has been improvement, and that is what really counts. I am proud of the team, our students, and our fans. I am hopeful that they will continue to support the program, because we will get there!”

The minor bright spot of the team has been its offense, which scored an average of 22 points in its first three games before trailing off in the past two. Led by sophomore quarterback, Cory Unger, the Tigers put up a season high 34 points in their game against Annville-Cleona. While the performance has faltered lately, there is still hope for the future.

“I see continuous improvement and more and more students committing to football at an earlier age,” added DeAntonio. “The games are a great event that continue to bring the community together.”

Milloy suggests, “For the rest of this season, I will continue to attempt to win, grow as a person, and become a man.”

Let’s hope the rest of the team follows Milloy’s example and makes the best of this season.
