For the month of January, FAHS senior Elizabeth Ickes was named the Carpenter Science Student of the Month. Liz was nominated by science teacher Matthew Biniek for her continual success in the science department, both in the classroom and during extracurricular activities. Here at Fleetwood, Ickes is a member of Science Olympiad team, Envirothon, National Honor Society, the cross-country team, and the student mentoring program.
Recently, Liz enjoyed great success at the Berks County Science Olympiad competition held at Kutztown University. She and her partner placed second in ornithology. Ickes also took third in the chemistry lab.
As a senior, Liz has made the most of her four years here at Fleetwood. She has taken part in all of the highest level science classes as well as other AP classes. Although she has not yet made her final college decision, she has narrowed her choices down to three options: DeSales University, Lock Haven University, and Philadelphia University.
Upon graduation from Fleetwood, Liz will be entering a physician’s assistant program where she hopes to eventually work under an immunologist. Her brother Andrew, a 2008 graduate of Fleetwood Area High School, is also in the science field. Andrew is a chemistry major at Juniata College, but he is currently studying at Leeds University in England.
Until college starts, Liz is enjoying the rest of her senior year by staying busy with all of her extracurricular activities. She is very much looking forward to her future college experiences and eventually obtaining a satisfying career.
