MRIs Are Noisy and (Usually) Painless

MRIs can seem like the most annoying procedures in the world. They are loud and obnoxious. Many people compare them to an x-ray or a cat-scan, but this machine is much more efficient, and, according to doctors, it takes better pictures of your insides.

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and, no matter how scary they may seem, they do not hurt.  Nevertheless, if you ask anyone who has ever had an MRI, he or she will tell you it is a most miserable experience. In fact, Physical Education teacher Eric Jonassen agrees.

“They are loud, long, and annoying,” said Jonassen.

Said FAHS student Katie Reunzahn, “You can only see out of the other end a little, and I got kind of freaked out.”

Study Hall Monitor J.R. Skokowski said, “I closed my eyes the entire time because I am claustrophobic.”

Then there are people such as FAHS student Ethan Martinez, who said he just chilled in the machine because the doctors let him listen to his NOW CD the whole time.

While MRIs do not hurt normal people, they may cause some discomfort if the patient must have contrast injected into his or her bloodstream. The contrast is a liquid that the doctors inject into certain people so they can see the images more clearly. The good news is that most people don’t have to have this done.
