For the first time since 1986, Fleetwood Area High School’s field hockey team brought home a county title. Alyssa Delp and Lauren Hoffman scored a goal each to give the Tigers a 2-0 win over Hamburg in the Berks County Championship on Thursday, 19 October.

“It feels pretty good and overwhelming that a team other than Wilson didn’t win,” senior field hockey captain Alyssa Delp said after claiming the County Title.

The Tigers had a tough run for the title as they faced the Brandywine Bullets in the quarterfinals and the fearsome Wilson Bulldogs in the semi-finals. However, with hard work and determination, the Tigers knocked both teams out of the run for the title.

This time last season, the Tigers were again in the running for the title but fell short to Wilson. This year was different; they beat the Bulldogs in the semi-final, not even giving them a chance at another championship. This year Fleetwood faced a new opponent in the finals: The Hamburg High School Hawks. The Tigers started out strong but couldn’t put one in the net during the first half. In the second half, leading scorer Alyssa Delp gave the Tigers a late lead. Later that half, Lauren Hoffman scored her goal to ensure the title for the Tigers.

“[We knew we would win] because we played them earlier in the season, and we go hard,” Delp said. “Beast mode’s on.”

Haley Schlechter, another senior on the team, shared Alyssa’s positivity about the team’s sure victory.

“Yes, I was confident my team could win if we stayed focused,” Schlechter said.

The Tigers fan section was the largest they had all season.  According to Delp, the reasons the team was able to pull out a victory were “support from the fans and determination to not have a repeat of last year’s loss in the county championship.”

After winning the county Title, the Lady Tigers hope to continue this hard work, determination, and perseverance to bring home a district title.
