One of the most widely debated topics between staff and students in Fleetwood Area School District is the use of cell phones in school. As expected, students and teachers take different sides on this issue, though their opinions are not quite as different as one would expect.
“Kids obviously shouldn’t be texting or on twitter in the middle of class, but teachers shouldn’t be allowed to take our phones,” senior Hannah Tillotson said.
Freshman Jill Rouse shares her opinion.
“I think as long as the teacher isn’t talking we should be allowed to answer a text, but the person you’re texting needs to know when to answer their text while not being rude to their teacher.”
Although students make a good point, the teachers have their opinions as well. FCS teacher Gina London is torn on the cell phone situation.
“I feel phones could be useful when I’m teaching and I need to look something up quickly, but, when I have something important to say, I want them to hear me.”
History teacher Susan Nagle has a very solid view on cell phones in school.
“There is absolutely no need to be texting in school. There’s a time and a place for texting.”
“I understand that texting is a newer version of passing a note, but back then, you got in trouble for passing notes, too,” science teacher Karen Favata said.
