For the past few years, some girls from the Fleetwood Volleyball team have been participating with club teams around the area in the winter season. But some club teams are not ordinary teams. Some of these teams travel to Penn State Main Campus and play volleyball Saturday through Monday. It’s a fun experience in which upcoming volleyball players should get involved.

Most of the team’s players leave the Friday before Memorial Day.  That way they can get their packed luggage to their dorms and arranged before they start playing.

“It’s always exciting to see what dorms we stay in,” freshman Becky Zerbe said.

Most girls leave school early so they have some relaxation time Friday night before the next day. Teammates, when they stay at Penn State, are assigned a floor and dorm room for their teammates; family members and coaches stay in hotels nearby.

Some of the girls even decide to make a great experience and get the girls together outside of practice. Getting involved with each other’s lives is just another part of the fun. Every year on one team, the girls make their own warm-up shirts. Showing off their creativity, they make their own designs and have fun with their teammates while making the shirts.

“Although the t-shirts are a lot of work, some teammates enjoy to bond together, and we turn into a family. We all act like we are all sisters,” senior Brittany Hottenstein said.

Although the main purpose is playing volleyball, the weekend also involves shopping in the stores down the street of Penn State.

Usually the teams play in the morning, afternoon, or evening waves, which means teams can play against each other at a set time in the morning, in the afternoon, or in the evening. Usually the times stay the same throughout Saturday and Sunday. Monday’s waves are determined by how well each team places.

After Monday comes around, the volleyball players are exhausted, but they leave with a great memory and time with friends. It allows athletes around the area at different schools to get to know each other.
