This season, the high school girls’ soccer team had a rough start. With a rough record full of multiple losses at the end of the season, the outcome did not look good for the team.
The Fleetwood girls’ soccer team was awarded the 20th seed in districts. Yet Fleetwood came out on top.
Their first game was against West Perry (ranked fourth). After going through two twenty-minute overtimes, the game ended in penalty kicks. Fleetwood won without even having to kick their fifth penalty kick.
Next came York Suburban. After scoring three quick goals in the first half, the Fleetwood soccer team was able to hold York Suburban off the second half for the win.
The girls’ team then traveled to Hershey Stadium to face Trinity (ranked fifth). The girls won yet again, so they were then going to the finals.
Most people within and outside of Fleetwood could not believe their eyes as the soccer team kept winning. Lauren Schlegel, sophomore, said she did not expect to have made it that far.
“No one did,” Schlegel said.
The beginning of the season was far from promising, and with senior Samantha Sanders getting injured around the middle of the season, the team was hurting a bit.
The team worked hard and managed to find its way to districts.
“We grew together and learned how to play well with each other,” Schlegel said.
The girls’ team felt like they had something to prove to the rest of the district and state. The team started at the bottom and worked their way to the top. Most of the team believes the reason for their success is their chemistry.
They may not be the strongest team in the history of Fleetwood girls’ soccer, but they sure have the heart and will to play well and be successful.
