At Fleetwood Area High School, there are a lot of kids who have an idea of what they want to do when they are older. A very unique occupation is mortuary science. Some jobs in this field include morticians and funeral directors.
There is a lot of criteria to become a mortician. First, they have to go to the place of residence. It may be at a hospital too. It is their job to pick up the body. They want to do this to try and preserve the body as much as possible. The goal is to get the body to be refrigerated so it stays how it is.
The second thing is making sure the body doesn’t have any hair that is not needed. After shaving, you want to moisturize the body. You especially want to put a lot of lotion on the face because that is the first thing you notice at an open casket funeral.
The next thing is preparing the body for embalming. Formaldehyde is a chemical that morticians use to replace the blood in the body. This makes the body stiff so it won’t rot away while preparing for the funeral. They make two incisions, one near the lower belly and one at the neck. They want to cut a major artery so the blood will come out quickly.
