Opinion–How to Look at the Current Middle East in the West

Sunday, October 9th, Israel declared war on Hamas. Both sides collectively have killed over 1,000 Palestinians and 1,000 Israelis.

Day after day, Americans are given more theories on how this war will affect them. Recently, there was a briefing done by Homeland Security; in it, it was indicated that this situation “might create additional homeland security challenges” involving the U.S. The Department of Homeland Security is also warning of extremist groups, such as neo-Nazis, being influenced by Hamas.

Dr. Farley, a UK professor, had much to say about the conflict.

“You can be a kind person and support Palestine without embracing the most horrific actions of Hamas… You can absolutely believe that Israel has a right to exist and that Israel has a right to defend itself and be very concerned about the kind of military action that Israel is going to undertake against the Gaza strip,” Farley said.

Farley acknowledges that the war isn’t instrinsically just, meaning there is not always a clear-cut good guy and bad guy.

“I think the problem is that people find themselves on one side and then feel like they have to commit to that side,” Farley said.

To some, developing an opinion might be hard; all students of Fleetwood Area High School should know that sometimes an opinion isn’t necessary.

Ryan Holiday, a well-established modern-day philosopher often quotes the ancient philosopher and once Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius: “You always own the option of having no opinion. Things you can’t control are not asking to be judged by you. Leave them alone.”

The conflict is by no means peaceful and one-sided, particularly when looked at on a historical basis, so owning no opinion, or little opinion, as to labeling who’s right and who’s wrong is more than okay. Like Aurelius says, if we have no control, sometimes it’s better to have no opinion.
