The culture of tattoos in the USA is vastly different than in other countries. While some countries have specific traditions, do not pull inspiration from any single tradition or source.
However, American traditional tattoos have recently resurfaced in popularity in the last 5 years amongst the youth and younger generations. This has caused a shift in the community as a whole, with a timeless art piece–the traditional tattoo–taking over shops nationwide.
According to honorablesociety.com, traditional tattoos almost always include bold, clean lines, vivid colors, iconic imagery, and minimal shading. They also often depict an iconic resemblance of nature and/or animals. One may see a tiger, bobcat, or any type of wildlife represented in the traditional art piece.
Fleetwood senior Brayden Chwatek shared the symbolism of his traditional tattoo, which happens to be a panther.
¨The meaning to my understanding is courage and survival against all odds,” Chwatek said.
Traditional Tattoos tend to symbolize deep rooted aspects of emotion. Many can find love, war, strength, triumph, and even defeat in these tattoos.
¨I chose this tattoo because it’s a core style of tattooing, and the designs last a long time,¨ Chwatek said. “But I really just got it ’cause it looks cool.”
The Fleetwood senior has a philosophy that has been expressed in tattooing for centuries: art is subjective, and some may get what they get simply because it just appeals to them.
