Meet Fleetwood Area High School’s New History Teacher, Jason Mraz

“I have always been fascinated by how history influences our world today. Throughout my time in school, I had teachers who made history feel engaging and alive; they inspired me to want to do the same! I aim to instill a love of learning in my students,” Mr. Jason Mraz, the new history teacher in Room 3 of Fleetwood Area High School, said.

Mraz’s positive and approachable demeanor can be attributed to the fact this is not Mraz’s first year here.

During his junior year of college, he had observed classes within the high school, then student-taught in his senior year. After that, he substituted the following year and now he works as a teacher. Ultimately, he had spent approximately three years here prior to teaching, although this is his first formal year.

Within his classes, Mraz plans on enacting several interactive activities with his class. 

“I want to incorporate more structured discussions in class to engage students more deeply with the material. Students learn best when they are empowered and have a voice, enabling active participation. I’m excited to try out new, engaging lessons to make social studies feel interactive and fun,” Mraz said.

Although to introverts his plans for the school year may seem intimidating, he was also very shy in school and rarely participated in discussions.

He expressed his understanding of those who are shy or nervous, although for building confidence he took on extracurricular activities and joined sports teams within his school. Perhaps this can be a form of advice for those going through something similar regarding interpersonal feelings.

Although he has ultimately moved away from his shy personality, he was still a bit jittery on his first day; however, after meeting his students, his nerves faded and he felt great in the classroom! He attributes this to his students.

“It’s a great place to grow as a teacher. I’d love to make a long-term impact here,” Mraz. said regarding his future at Fleetwood.

As for his personal life, he greatly enjoys rock climbing, coaching track, pole vaulting, and spending time with his friends and family. He also enjoys spending time outdoors,. Additionally, he is interested in the idea of owning a dog in the future but does not have any pets at the moment.
