Is season three of Smiling Friends going to add two new special episodes?

Season three of the Adult Swim cartoon Smiling Friends recently ended with booming reviews for the eight episodes featured. As there have been in the previous seasons, there were many small plot points and new characters to follow this season, along with a new focus on life outside the work that the main characters do.

Smiling Friends is an adult-animated sitcom created by Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack, who both originally started making animations using Adobe and releasing the clips onto platforms like YouTube and Newgrounds. The show revolves around a group of characters in Philadelphia working for a company called “The Smiling Friends.” Usually, episodes follow the main characters Pim and Charlie helping the goofy personalities of the Smiling Friends universe to smile (hence the name of the show) or achieve a goal.

Critics have been raving about Smiling Friends ever since it was greenlit in early 2021. Quickly following the release of season one, the show acquired a cult-like fanbase through social media.

As the worst of the season three episodes, “Silly Samuel” delivers a disappointingly forgettable episode. The episode takes an annoying character, Silly Samuel, who lashes out in defense towards his own appearance at an exhausting rate and makes him the prime subject of the “A”plotline with Charlie and Pim trying their best to consolidate Samuel’s frustrations.

The “B” plot involves Mr. Boss and Alan trying their best to renovate the extremely dangerous Smiling Friends establishment.  This side plot is much more memorable than the main episode, which is quite disappointing for a season with such a highly rated lineup otherwise.

Inarguably, one of the best episodes of the show in its entirety is episode four of season three, “Curse of the Green Halloween Witch.” This episode pinballs off of a season one episode, “A Silly Halloween Special,”  by revealing a seriously grim and suspenseful story underneath the usual comedic tone of the show. Only this time, the story features Pim’s descent into madness. Some of the most fluid animation created for the series is showcased through an array of body horror within this episode. With all of the references to classic thriller movies and stereotypical tropes done in the horror genre, “Curse of the Green Halloween Witch” is like a love letter to horror cinema.

Overall, season three of Smiling Friends has an awesome line-up of funny and intriguing episodes.
