The crowning of the homecoming King and Queen is often one of the most anticipated events of homecoming weekend. On the evening of October 9th, Fleetwood students and community members filled Tiger Stadium for the final event of the weekend. The football team was prepared to play Holy Name High School, and the crowning was set for halftime. After two quarters of a rather interesting football game, the moment had come.

The track was cleared for the entrance of the 2010 homecoming court candidates. Nominees Jill Andrews, Cale Ahearn, Karley Eberhart, Leo Rosario, Elyse Elliker, Ryan Milloy, Nikki Heffner, Pablo Nunez, Jessica Hill, and Ethan McGlinsey entered the track as the loudspeaker proclaimed their biographies. Also present were Fleetwood’s 2009 homecoming king and queen, Matt Cortazzo and Charlotte Buck.

After a short while, Elyse Elliker’s and Leo Rosario’s names were announced as this year’s King and Queen.

Said Ryan Milloy, “I think they won because they are great kids—they are just great kids. Leo plays football and knows a lot of people through that, and Elyse is also very involved at school, so that gave them a really good chance at winning. Being Elyse’s partner was probably my favorite part of homecoming.”

Maria Elliker, Elyse’s oldest sister, was also named Homecoming Queen her senior year at Fleetwood, and older brother Alex was the member of another past homecoming.

“Yes, [Maria] was that crazy girl that won,” said Elyse.

Although membership in the homecoming court seems to be in the Elliker blood, she was surprised she won.

“I thought it was awfully nice. I have no idea why I may have won,” Elliker commented.

As for the new Homecoming King, many people of Fleetwood share a similar view on why Leo was selected by the student body.

“For years, Leo has been a top dog at this school. He has been the big fish in the big pond. But what is better, being the top dog or the big fish? It doesn’t matter because Leo is both,” said Mr. Ryan Milloy.

Although surprise was the emotion shared by this year’s winners, the students of Fleetwood High School obviously thought both candidates deserved the titles of King and Queen. Both Leo and Elyse are respectable athletes, students, and friends, making them truly the people’s choice.
