Each year, the social studies department at Fleetwood Area High School takes the junior class and select sophomores to Washington D.C. This year, the field trip will be taking place on April 20th. This trip is very educational because the students go to the Holocaust Museum, which has many informational exhibits and gives a good representation of what happened during that horrific experience.
“Visiting the museum is a reminder of what happened in World War II, and it’s an example of genocide, which we need to experience so that it will never happen again,” said history teacher Sherri Rankin. “We’re starting at Arlington cemetery, then going to Washington to visit the museums. Students can also walk up and see the White House.”
Arlington cemetery is where American soldiers are buried, which makes it just as important to see as the museums.
Student Molly Flannery said, “The box cars are the best part. It’s where the Jews would stand for hours waiting to go to camps. We got to see how cramped it really was.”
Another student, Andy Moran, said, “I don’t think I had a favorite part because it’s all really sad, but you realize how bad it really was when you get to be in that train car that Jews were transported in.”
“I’m looking forward to going back and seeing all the exhibits I didn’t get to see,” continued Flannery.
The holocaust trip is a very important experience in which to participate because it is a huge part of the global past and because this example of genocide helped to shape the world we live in today.
“People should definitely go on this trip,” said Moran. “On top of it being educational, the bus rides are fun.”
