On April 3rd-6th, 2011, Fleetwood’s very own Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club attended the state competition for business leadership.
Kayln Hess won second place for community service hours. Overall, she accrued 960.
Hess said of her accomplishment, “I didn’t even know I could get an award. I didn’t have to try hard. I raised Mila, a seeing-eye dog. That is at least 16 hours a day.”
Demi Rissmiller and Brandon Green won third place in the Partnership with Business Project.
Said Rissmiller, “I put a lot of work into the project, and to not have gotten first or second is completely heartbreaking. Also, I would have enjoyed a trip to Orlando for nationals.”
Elizabeth Rothenberger and Dominick Scatamacchia both won fourth place for their community service project with Friend Inc., a non-profit organization in Kutztown. They raised money and food by filling holiday food boxes, hosting a school hat day, offering a Christmas cheer day, and implementing a raffle at the holiday craft show. All in all, $328.92 was donated to Friend Inc.
Scatamacchia concluded, “I enjoyed working with Beth Rothenberger on the project, and, although we did not make it to nationals, we were proud to make it this far. We placed fourth out of twenty, which is really good.”
Joe Rudderrow and Kiley Petro both earned a National Business Achievement award. There are four different levels that can be earned: Future, Business, Leader, and America. Rudderrow and Petro both won the award for the Future Level. This award recognizes students nationwide for successfully completing the given tasks to expand on leadership skills while emphasizing education. The tasks focus on basic business skills, an introduction to community service, and FBLA involvement at the local level.
The FAHS FBLA team received sixth place for community service hours. To achieve this, members can complete service hours through chapter activities or on their own. Fleetwood’s chapter had twenty-six members submit hours; in all, they accumulated 1,733 total hours.
