FAHS Post-Season Athletic Awards Announced

On Wednesday June 1st, 2011, Fleetwood Area High School held its annual athletic awards program. Athletic director Mr. Matthew Diehl began the evening by welcoming students and their families, as well as coaches, faculty, and administrators.The awards ceremony then proceeded with each coach presenting a brief review of his or her respective sport’s season, which included the team’s overall record, playoff achievements, and all-division and all-county selections. Each coach also had the opportunity to announce his or her selection for most valuable player as well as his or her pick for the Coach’s Award.

Boys’ and Girls’ cross country coach Rory McMullen presented his MVP trophies to Branden Green and Elizabeth Ickes, followed by field hockey coach Joyce Angstadt, who presented her Coach’s awards to Alyssa Delp and Liz Bergman and her MVP award to Sarah Bergman.

 
Head football coach Tom Wapinsky honored Ryan Milloy and Schnightder Louis with Coach’s awards and Anthony Onimus with the MVP trophy.
 
Mr. Mark Coassolo then presented his selections for the Coach’s award to Jordan Shomper and Derek Schwab and his MVP award to Dillon Turner.
 
Boys’ Soccer head coach Keith Schlegel honored most valuable player Pablo Nunez and Coach’s award recipients Dylan Geisler and Eric Houghton with their trophies.
 
Fall cheerleading honorees were MVP Jessica Moore and Coach’s award winner Becky Himmelreich, who received their awards from coach Joanne Lonker.
 
Rounding out the fall sports was girls’ tennis and girls’ volleyball. Tennis coach Brian Miller gave Samantha Sanders, Olivia Edwards, and Sarah Miller Coach’s awards, and his MVP was senior Alyssa Sell. Girls’ volleyball assistant coach Tuyet Pham presented the Coach’s award to Samantha Guido and Kiana Stokes and the most valuable player trophy to Kaylie Vrabel.The winter sports started with boys’ basketball assistant coach Brian Benkert. He honored senior Kyle Kercher with the Coach’s award and Bo Comer as the MVP.

 
Girls’ basketball head coach Matt Kellett gave only a Coach’s award to Shelby Otruba, followed by swimming coach Jeffrey Mikitka who gave only an MVP award to Jeff Mikitka, Jr.
 
Wrestler Brandon Young was given a Coach’s award, and freshman Joey Fick was given the MVP award. In addition, four wrestlers were honored for reaching at least 100 points this past season. Joey Fick, Brandon Young, Darren Kline, and Jeff Estima all joined the 100 points club.
 
Winter cheerleader Heather Wanner was an MVP, followed by Leah Schaeffer who received a Coach’s award.Spring sports started off with varsity baseball coach Rolland Green, who chose Ryan Tyson as the Coach’s award recipient and University of Cincinnati bound Devin Wenzel as his MVP.

 
Girls’ soccer coach Mike Boyer selected seniors Sarah Bergman, Angela Heydt, and Kaley Kinek for the Coach’s awards and Liz Bergman as his most valuable player.
 
Softball award winners were Rachel Stump for the Coach’s award, and co-MVP’s Kaylie Vrabel and Alyssa Sell were also recognized.
 
Boys’ tennis coach Brennan Miller issued Kyle Gehret the Coach’s award and Bo Comer and Christian Boyer the MVP awards.
 
Track and Field coaches Jess and Nate Cammauf selected Haley Fidler and Wilfredo Feliciano for the Coach’s award and Haley Schlechter and Anthony Onimus as the MVP’s.
 
Lastly, boys’ volleyball Coach’s awards were given to Dylan Geisler and Miles Ansel, and Leo Rosario was named the team MVP.Matthew Diehl then presented the medals for the winners of the Fackler-Howor Sportsmanship award to seniors Dylan Geisler and Kaylie Vrabel.

 
Vice Principal Tom Salpino issued the scholar athlete awards to Elizabeth Bergman, Sarah Bergman, Alyssa Sell, and Brandon Young. To be eligible for this award, athletes had to obtain a minimum 90% GPA for four years as well as have lettered in two varsity sports for at least two years.The program concluded with Diehl presenting plaques to the 2011 Outstanding Senior Male and Female Athletes , Anthony Onimus and Liz and Sarah Bergman
