Each year, students across Pennsylvania participate in a competition encompassing scholastic abilities, interviewing skills, performing arts, public speech, and personal fitness.  This pageant is known as Pennsylvania’s Outstanding Young Woman Competition.

The main motivation behind winning this ‘pageant’ is the opportunity of receiving a scholarship to a school of the winner’s choice. As of this summer, Olivia Edwards of Fleetwood Area High School was in contention to be Pennsylvania’s Outstanding Young Woman for 2012.

Once known as The Pennsylvania Junior Miss Pageant, this competition has been running since its first national pageant in 1958. The Outstanding Young Woman Program is a non-profit organization that is intended to help support intellectual, well-rounded young women around the state exceed in their goals and expectations, which is done by identifying their talents, strengths, and outstanding abilities as teenage women.

The ladies enter the competition with nineteen others from Berks County  as well as many others from around the state.

Olivia said she feels her global views on current problems, as opposed to other high school girls, along with her lack of fear of public speaking, will help ensure she does well in this year’s competition.

The final portion of the pageant is set for October 1st at 7:00 p.m.

After her senior year at Fleetwood, Olivia plans to attend either the University of Maryland or the American University of Washington D.C. for political science.

She wishes to have a career in the political field and hopes to make a positive impact on Capitol Hill one day.
