Uggs Expected to Dominate Winter Accessories

Winter is fast approaching in Berks County, meaning it is almost time to break out the comfy sweaters and hot cocoa. For many middle and high school girls, wintertime also means stepping out in their new Ugg boots.

Ugg, an Australian brand made popular in the 1970s, makes suede boots, moccasins, and other footwear. Ugg has recently begun to sell clothes as well. Uggs emerged as a fashion trend in the United States in the late 1990s and as a world-wide trend in the late 2000s.

Over the last 5 years Ugg boots have become part of a revolution.  Many students at Fleetwood believe Uggs are a part of their body.

“They are so fluffy it makes me feel like I’m walking on clouds, and they keep my feet warm so that’s always a plus,” FAHS senior Madison Rice said.

Another student at Fleetwood, Kelsey Steiner, shares Madison’s positivity about Uggs.

“The best thing about Ugg boots is the inside. Plus, I love the designs on mine.”

The only con many students find when purchasing Uggs is the price. Prices for actual Ugg boots range from $85 to $150.

These prices keep many students from purchasing the real thing or asking for them for their birthdays, Christmas, or other holidays. However, many major department stores such as K-mart, Wal-Mart and Target sell generic versions of Uggs for less than half the price of the real versions. Senior Kyana Watson, feels Uggs are just too pricey.

“Ugg boots are too expensive! I buy fake ones. I have Fox Ridge moccasins, and I have Bumper brand boots, and they are no different than the real Uggs.”

Even Hollywood is catching on to the Ugg revolution. Many stars such as Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Hudson, and Selena Gomez have all been seen wearing Ugg brand boots and moccasins. Even Oprah caught on to this trend, listing Ugg boots as one of her “favorite things” on her talk show.

Fans  will tell you to buy them early. Because supply usually runs short by the time the cold hits in December, interested shoppers should be sure to get them now while they’re still available.
