Jeremy Lin, a 23-year-old Asian-American basketball player, has taken over New York City as well as the country with his hard work and impressive play. After being counted out and cut many times in his basketball career, Lin overcame all doubt to prove everyone wrong. He’s even taken over social media sites such as Twitter with his underdog story.
Jeremy Lin grew up in Palo Alto, California. After receiving relatively little interest from college basketball programs, attended Harvard University and later went to the Golden State Warriors undrafted in 2010 only to be cut by both the Warriors and the Rockets; however, he was eventually picked up by the New York Knicks in 2011.
Lin, who played only 55 minutes in the Knicks’ first 23 games, is the first NBA player with at least 20 points and seven assists in his first four starts. Jeremy Lin went from warming the end of the Knicks’ bench to being selected for the Rising Star basketball game during All Star Weekend.
The fans that pack Madison Square Garden, also known as the “Mecca of Basketball,” can be heard chanting “MVP” chants for him. Lin has given them the excitement they’ve always wanted.
Not only has the New York Knicks’ stock risen significantly because of Lin, but his name has become commonplace on Twitter, appearing in hashtags such as “#lintastic” and “#Linning.” During a one week period, the New York Knicks’ point guard was tweeted about more than 2.5 million times, a record for NBA players. Jeremy Lin has quickly gone from living on the couch of teammate Landry Fields to being one of the most talked about athletes in the country.
“Jeremy Lin is ‘Lin-tastic.’ He has finally put excitement back into the ‘Garden.’ The Knicks really needed a player like him,” Micah Storms, junior at Fleetwood Area High School and longtime basketball fan, said.
“Jeremy Lin is a good player but isn’t worth all the hype that he is getting,” Anthony Parzanese, a junior at Fleetwood Area High School, said.
With Jeremy Lin continuing his high level of play, who knows how popular this story will get? “Lin-sanity” has single-handedly taken over the world of sports, leaving many eager to see if he can keep playing at this level or if he will slow down.
