Course selection has always been a difficult task when starting a new year in high school. There’s the battle to try to get the best electives, making sure students have all the credits they need while deciding what level of classes they should take.
That’s all about to change with the new policy enacted at Fleetwood. The new system is based on students choosing their classes online. They go on and select their core classes, followed by selecting the main electives they want. Students are allowed to pick from several alternate electives besides the main ones they want. This gives them the chance to ensure they will get at least one of the electives desired. But is this really effective?
“I like the old way on paper better. It was a lot easier and better to understand,” junior Zach Bubbenmoyer said.
The old system involved a guidance counselor coming into the classroom at some point during the fourth quarter and helping students choose classes based on academic levels, interests, and whether or not they attend tech for part of the day. Then the student would get his or her rough schedule signed by a parent or guardian and resubmit it to the guidance office.
However, as more students enter the school district, guidance counselors had to change the policy to accommodate everyone. Students hope this system becomes an easy and efficient way for them to choose their courses.
