Iron Man 3 a Must See

Here’s a bold statement: Iron Man is the coolest superhero ever.

Don’t believe me? Watch Iron Man 3, the newest addition in Marvel’s long line of superhero movies.

Even if one is not well-versed in the comic book movie universe–full disclosure, I haven’t even seen the first two Iron Man films–this movie is sure to entertain you.

After the events of The Avengers, last year’s big superhero epic, Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) has settled into somewhat of a routine life, but the introduction of a new terrorist, the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), puts Stark back into action.

He publicly calls out the Mandarin by giving out his home address to the media, and soon enough he is back in his Iron Man suit. Or, as it were, suits.

The plot moves at a brisk place, introducing and developing characters including Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow), Stark’s girlfriend, and Killian Aldridge (Guy Pearce), a brilliant scientist.

Further discussing plot or characters would inevitably lead to spoilers, and this isn’t a movie  to be spoiled.

What makes Iron Man 3 work so well is a sense of humor. From the opening lines, the movie announces itself as self-aware with a biting, sarcastic sense of humor.

Robert Downey Jr. gets most of the funny one liners.  (My favorite is when Iron Man is battling a girl who is literally on fire; he quickly jokes, “You’ve walked right into this one, but I’ve dated girls hotter than you”).  But everyone from the main villains to insignificant supporting actors get funny lines.

It is this humor that moves the film along and makes some of the overblown action sequences a little easier to swallow.

The obligatory action set pieces are at times a little too over-the-top, but they move the plot along nicely enough.

Robert Downey, Jr., excels as Tony Stark/Iron Man. He is so charismatic that he makes even his character’s more serious elements, like his anxiety attacks, funny. Downey realizes he’s playing a super hero, not a main character in a Greek tragedy, so he has fun with the role.

Ben Kingsley gets the memo as well, and he is terrific as the scene-stealing Mandarin.

With a deft mixture of humor, action, and clever plotting, Iron Man 3 proves to be the perfect summer blockbuster entertainment. Don’t feel left out if comic book movies aren’t your thing.
