U.S. Brings Home the Gold in Sochi

The 2014 Olympic Games were held in Sochi, Russia, on 7 February 2014. The United States came home with nine gold medals, seven silver, and twelve bronze. The categories in which America ranked were Freestyle Skiing, Snowboarding, Alpine Skiing, Figure Skating, Bobsled, Skeleton, Ice hockey, Short Track, and Luge.

The U.S. took home gold medals in Freestyle Skiing, Snowboarding, Alpine Skiing and Figure Skating.  Joss Christensen, David Wise, and Maddie Bowman all brought home gold medals for USA in Freestyle Skiing. Sage Kotsenburg, Jamie Anderson, and Kaitlyn Farrington won gold for team USA in Snowboarding. Ted Ligety and Mikaela Shiffrin were gold medalists for Alpine Skiing. Meryl Davis and Charlie White performed as a couple for Figure Skating, bringing home gold for team USA.

Devin Logan and Ashley Caldwell won silver for team USA in Freestyle Skiing. Andrew Weibrecht brought home silver for Apline Skiing. Elena Meyer ranked silver for Bobsledding. Noelle Pikus-Pace won silver for USA in the Skeleton. USA Men’s Ice Hockey team won a silver medal. The USA 5,000m relay team brought home a silver medal.

Hannah Kearney and Patrick Deneen won bronze for team USA in Freestyle Skiing. Alex Deibold and Trevor Jacob took bronze for USA in Snowboarding. Julia Mancuso and Bode Miller won USA bronze in Alpine Skiing. Team USA Figure Skating won a bronze medal. USA Bobsledding Team brought home three bronze medals. Matthew Antoine ranked bronze for USA in the Skeleton. Erin Hamlin placed bronze for team USA in the Luge.

“The Olympics are fun to watch because of all the different sports I don’t get to see every day,” junior Wyatt Pennsinger said.

“I watch the Olympics because I love to look up to my favorite snowboarders,” junior Logan Silvius said.

Overall, America was fourth place in the medal count, trailing Russia’s first-place success.
