Fleetwood Track and Field is coming off of the most successful season in its history. After an undefeated finish for the boys team and a very strong season for the girls in 2015, the team will look to continue its dominance in Berks County.
Last year saw some of the team’s strongest performers graduate, meaning that new leadership will be essential if 2016 will see similar results as last year.
The season started with a scrimmage against Twin Valley, where Fleetwood hosted the visiting Raiders. Scoring for the scrimmage was not officially kept, as this scrimmage served solely as a way for the teams to prepare for their first matches of the year.
“From what I saw, we have a very talented track team,” sophomore Dana Gehringer said.
The first competitive meet of the year came with mixed results. The meet was on Tuesday, 29 March. It was on the road against Wyomissing, and it was an early test for the competitors. Wyomissing is a perennially-strong team, and they project to have another impressive season ahead of them. The boys’ team was able to come away with a tough win against the Spartans, winning 91-57.
“We did a really nice job,” senior Nick Matteo said.
The girls’ team was not able to come away from the same result. They kept the match close throughout, but, in the end, they came up short and lost 90-80.
The Tigers came out with another strong result at the Oxenreider Relays at Muhlenberg High School. Out of the seven competing teams, Fleetwood finished in second. An outright victory was within reach, but Wilson managed to come away with a narrow seven-point victory.
After a good start, it is beginning to look like Fleetwood may have a chance to replicate the success they had in 2015. Upcoming meets against Schuylkill Valley, Tulpehocken, and Hamburg will give Fleetwood Track and Field an opportunity to set the tone for another triumphant year.
