Nathan Sutherland, 36, a licensed practical nurse, was arrested on 22 January 2019 and charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse after assaulting a woman in a vegetative state and impregnating her.
Police were led to Sutherland after giving all male employees of Hacienda Healthcare DNA tests. His DNA matched that of the baby’s. He refused to talk to police and plead the fifth immediately.
Sutherland appeared in court on 23 January 2019. He was released on a cash only bond of $500,000, and he must wear a monitor device.
Attorney David Gregan asked for a lower bond, citing no prior criminal record and describing Sutherland as a family man with four young children at home.
His wife has since filed for divorce.
Hacienda Healthcare is now upping security. The victim’s primary care doctor, Thanh Nguyen, was suspended, while another doctor resigned.
The baby is reportedly doing well and was released from the hospital. The victim’s family has said they will take care of him.
The family has said the victim, still unidentified, is not comatose or in a vegetative state but rather intellectually disabled. She has also apparently been in the facility since she was three-years-old.
