May 2nd was the 12-year anniversary of the day DEVGRU (Seal Team 6) took out Osama Bin Laden. According to History.com, the raid of the hideout took place at 1 a.m. local time, which would be 4 p.m. EST. The entire operation was said to have lasted 40 minutes.
According to “FBI files,” Osama Bin Laden “was a violent terrorist and mass murderer who used bombings and bloodshed to advance his extremist goals.”
The file also states that Bin Laden founded Al Qaeda in 1988.
“Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body. For over two decades, bin Laden has been al Qaeda’s leader and symbol, and has continued to plot attacks against our country and our friends and allies. The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation’s effort to defeat al Qaeda,” Former President Barack Obama said on a live news broadcast the night of.
The actual military operation codename was dubbed Operation Neptune Spear. A black hawk chopper dropped off 25 Navy Seals. Robert J. O’Neill was the man who officially took the shot on Bin Laden. O’Neill has spoken of the motivation that pushed him for the mission.
“The person I always bring up is the single mom that went to work on Tuesday morning and then decided it’s better to jump to her death than burn alive. We went for her,” O’Niell said. “A foot-and-a-half in front of me was Osama bin Laden. And I shot him twice, and then once more.”
This day will always mark a day when the American people all came together, no matter their political party.
