During summer, few take the time to think of schoolwork. Kids of all ages get distracted very easily. The most important part of summer is to have fun and not have to worry about too many things at once. The best thing to do is keep a child active, but he or she also needs to be active with learning as well.
Lots of children go to the beach and spend time playing rather than catching up on learning to prepare for the next school year. A good idea is to do something like playing flashcard games with kids. During long car rides or while sitting in a spot where they could focus on a game, parents can throw knowledgeable stuff into the routine.
“Over the summer, students typically lose the equivalent of about a month’s worth of learning, mostly in the areas of math facts and spelling. Research has also found that summer learning loss is more severe among students with disabilities, English language learners, and students living in poverty,” Joel Abrams said.
To get them started, suggest one journal entry about “10 Things I Want to Do Before Summer is Over.” The list can include activities like watching the sunrise, going an entire day without wearing shoes, or seeing how far they can spit a watermelon seed. Doing a task like this every day will help children open up their minds and being prepared. If they prepare by studying math or English, when they go back to school, there will be a better chance of high grades and good memory.
“Children will do what they see the adults around them do. Summer is the perfect time for you to reduce screen time and increase time reading, writing, taking walks, playing games, or having conversations,” Abrams said.
Being a good role model to a child shows them that they aren’t alone in what they are doing. Being educated is important for everybody.
