Fleetwood students involved in FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) were able to achieve excellence this school year. Around thirty Fleetwood students moved on to the PA FBLA State Leadership Conference, which came after the regional competition.
FAHS FBLA President Hannah Nied placed first in community service hours for the entire state, with over 100 more hours than FAHS FBLA Treasurer Emily Walbert, who placed second.
“The PA FBLA community service awards are known as the Big 33,” FAHS business teacher and FBLA adviser Mrs. Kelly Ackerman said.
FBLA is a club that meets regularly on Thursdays, once a week.
“We run through the upcoming plans and opportunities for community service in the community and then do some sort of activity,” Nied said.
With both regional and state competitions, there is something to look forward to when participating and being active in the club. Locations for regional events are typically held at local colleges, while the state competitions are held at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
“For competitions, you choose a category to compete in, be it personal finance, public speaking, accounting, etc., and depending on how well you either test or perform, you will move on to the next level. FBLA has a variety of events that you can participate in, which all test your skill and understanding on that specific subject,” FAHS FBLA Vice President Andrew Haas said.
Participation in the club offers some unique benefits.
“Service hours can range from band performances or field shows to tutoring to helping out in your community. Members that log just three hours per school year receive a certificate that they can add to their resume, Naviance, and portfolio,” Ackerman said.
“The biggest benefits that people can gain from joining FBLA are professional skills, soft skills, hard skills, networking, and you can use this as a resume builder for college,” Haas said.
