On May 18th, the Fleetwood Area High School had its spring concert, and the middle school orchestra was given an opportunity to go on stage with the high school to perform a piece.

The middle school orchestra prepared for months to join the high school on stage to perform the piece, ‘Greater Than.’

“The middle schoolers met every other week from January until May,” Mrs. Sarah Shuey, high school orchestra director, said.

Shuey faced several challenges in bringing this large group together.

“The hardest part was figuring out how to get the middle schoolers here to practice with the high school,” Shuey said.

Shuey happened upon the piece she selected for the orchestras to play the previous summer.  The title, ‘Greater Than,’ holds a deeper meaning for the group.

“The intention from the composer is that we as a whole are greater than we as an individual,” Shuey said.

This joint concert performance gave many students who might have never had a chance to play with their siblings, because of a separation of age, an opportunity to perform on stage together.

Caleb Valentine and his younger brother, Aaron Valentine, are prime examples of this scenario. The two had the opportunity to play together on stage even though Aaron is still in middle school.

“It was a fun piece. He didn’t really let me practice with him at home, but it was ok,” Caleb Valentine said.

Even students who did not have younger siblings in attendance from middle school enjoyed their performance.

“I think as a group it was good,” FAHS senior Colin Snyder said.
