Students at Fleetwood Area High School are able to apply for internships during the school day to get a head start on what they’re interested in pursuing in the future.

At FAHS, many seniors are getting started on their lives after school by doing internships in many different places to help them discover more about what they want to do as a career. Students can get early experience while they’re still in school.

“Internships could help me in the future by giving me job experience and give me more opportunities because I have more experience in the field than most,” senior Aiden Soumas, who is interning at Redner’s Warehouse Markets in the accounting department, said.

“Students can finally choose what they want to learn about, without a curriculum, allowing a free and open path of education,” student Ryan Hromiak, who is interning in a financial planning firm in Spring Ridge called Atlas Wealth Partners, said.

Internships last around two hours every school day. If current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are interested, they can visit business teacher Mrs. Kelly Ackerman and help get their schedule arranged for the upcoming school year.

“The benefit of doing an internship is that you get genuine hands-on experience in that work environment before you are even in college. I think it eliminates the worries of choosing a major in college and then changing your mind when it’s too late. I also get the experience working with other teachers and coworkers, and that is helpful because it’s the most important thing to think about when you have a job. You have to make sure you are being responsible and respectful towards your coworkers,” Kaitlin Mileshosky, who is interning in the instrumental music classes at the middle school, said.

Doing an internship is a viable option when it comes to deciding a career path or continuing to work on the career that is chosen.

“I decided to go for my internship to do what would be best for my future. Instead of taking four gym classes and a few study halls my senior year, I chose to fill up my schedule with something career-related that will be a little more important for me,” Hromiak said.

“I decided to do an internship because it will help me decide what I want to do in the future. A benefit of doing an internship is gaining a lot of knowledge in a job field that you are interested in,” Soumas said.

“My internship could help me in the future because, when going into Music Education, you are given a site to student teach at. I think this internship has already set me up for success in the sense that I am already actively gaining that experience in high school. When I get to college, I’m confident that my skills in that area won’t start from scratch and I will continue to grow and build upon my abilities thanks to my internship. It’s such a great experience to discover if the career path you’ve chosen is the one for you. I highly recommend anyone who is able to take the opportunity to do an internship,” Mileshosky said.
