“When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable, if I have not an excellent library”
-Jane Austen

As the world grows more and more, and generations come and go, the forms of entertainment change. Some English teachers at Fleetwood Area High School were kind enough to share what their 2023 year has looked like in books.

Mrs. Karen Sahadyak’s year in books was plentiful to say the least. Reading over 20 novels this year, Sahadyak seemed most passionate for My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry and Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer, both by Fredrik Backman. One of Sahadayk’s most recent reads to end the year was  Robert DiYanni’s You Are What You Read: A Practical Guide to Reading Well.

Mr. Zachary Houp of the Fleetwood English Department reported an estimate of 20 books for the 2023 year. The most significant of them all was a collection of historical novels by Jeff Shaara, which Houp read to prepare for a family vacation in Williamsburg. Houp also mentioned Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir.

“I was thrilled with how accessible he makes science,” Houp said.

Mrs. Tara Carino seems to find herself mostly in debt to the novels of her curriculum but did find time to read. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Sherry Turkle’s Reclaiming Conversation were two books she picked up over the course of 2023. Turkle is an author whom she regularly enjoys.

All students are welcome to start their reading journey by browsing through the Fleetwood High School library throughout the school day, not to mention the Fleetwood Public Library.
