The National Letter of Intent commits a student to a particular college and confirms that the college will provide an athletic scholarship to the student for at least one year.

According to the Next College Student Athlete recruiting website, the NLI program includes Division One and Division Two schools.

“The NLI is a voluntary program consisting of 610 DI and DII schools. DIII, Junior Colleges and NAIA universities do not participate in the NLI program,” NCSA said.

Several students at Fleetwood Area High School have signed letters of intent for college. Senior Hunter Svoboda signed a letter of intent to attend William and Mary College in December of 2023.

The letter offers security for the student signing and relieves them of the stress that comes with college searches.

“The recruiting process is very stressful, so knowing that it was over sooner due to me finding the right fit was a weight being lifted off my shoulders,” Svoboda said.

Being able to sign a letter of intent does not come easily, and underclassmen need to work hard in their sport to earn one.

“Underclassmen can work to sign their letter of intent by just putting work in and getting themselves out there,” Svoboda said.

The NLI program is rewarding for hard-working student-athletes and ensures their ability to attend college and continue to play their sport. Signing early also allows students to connect with their future teammates before their freshman year begins.

“I would recommend signing early because I benefited so much from it. I have a bond with each guy in my recruiting class already, and it’s only January,” Svoboda said.
