“You know what they say. When you do what you love, you never work a day in your life. That’s how it feels to be in theater,” the lead in Fleetwood Area High School’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” senior Dominic Barrell-Kobryn, said.
“Fiddler on the Roof” is a 1964 musical by Joseph Stein. Since the middle of December, cast members at the high school have been preparing for their performances in the musical, which took place Friday, March 15th, through Sunday, March 17th, 2024.
“It is very fascinating to see how much the cast and the production have improved up until opening night,” senior cast member Lindsay Solomon said.
The plot centers around Tevye, portrayed by Barrell-Kobryn, a father of five daughters who gets caught between Jewish traditions and his family’s happiness.
“The most difficult part of putting this show together would have to be embodying our characters. There are so many things one must realize to portray a character on stage, including voice, movement, character motivation, and inflections,” Barrell-Kobryn said.
Fleetwood produces a spring musical each year. Students involved in the musical get to work with other students across all grades as well as teachers, who make sure the musical goes as smoothly as possible. Students can participate in the cast, pit orchestra, or stage crew.
“My favorite part about being in the musical has got to be the people I get to work with. There are such amazing and talented people involved in this production, many of which are some of my closest friends,” Barrell-Kobryn said.
Memories from these plays stick with the students involved far after their high school careers are over.
“There is something so special about the feeling you get when you step onto a stage in full costume and perform music like this. It’s beyond exciting,” Barrell-Kobryn said.
