To end off the school year, the annual Quill and Scroll ceremony occurred at Fleetwood Area High School.
A selection of students participated in the Quill and Scroll program. In addition to elected Quill and Scroll students, others have also been recognized for their achievements in the business, journalism, and art departments.
A variety of different awards were given out to different students.
“There are three honors societies–Quill and Scroll (the journalism department), National Art Honor Society, and National Business Honor society,” Sara Sanocki, supervisor for the yearbook and magazine department, says.
The National Business Honor Society requires students to take two business courses, have a 3.5 or higher GPA, and write an essay about themselves. The inductees were announced at the FBLA State Leadership Conference held in April.
As for Quill and Scroll, students are required to be in the top third of their class the year they’re inducted. They have to stand out as a student for being creative, meeting deadlines, and being cooperative. The advisor sends out a recommendation to the Quill and Scroll board, who then sends out an acceptance.
Individual awards, such as the Tiger Paw, are also handed out, along with yearbook and magazine honors and business awards.
“The main thing, at least for me, is that it pushes me to do my best, and it challenges me to try and maintain the level needed to be a part of something like this,” Hailey Olivieri, a student who received recognition for Paw Print Magazine, said.
Students who have participated or have been invited to the awards program claim to have a positive experience out of it.
“It was something that I haven’t experienced before in high school,” Ayla Fenstermacher, a student who is part of the yearbook, says. “I think it was fun to root for my friends and be proud of them, especially since they got awards. It was nice seeing them achieve what they’ve been trying to achieve all year.”
Students have many benefits if they are chosen for this program.
Cloey Rentschler received awards for the business department.
“I got a scholarship for business, and I’m going to be using it for college and get a new laptop!” Rentschler said.
Sanocki believes this event is a great way to honor the kids in certain departments.
“A number of years ago, I had kids who worked their butts off, and I wanted a way to honor what they were doing. I started digging around and found out about Quill and Scroll through colleagues and found out we have a charter here at Fleetwood that we weren’t using to recognize students. I talked to Mr. Houp and Mr. Gaston, and we all agreed we have a lot of journalism media and honor societies here that people can join for something they do really well in,” Sanocki says.
