Fleetwood Area High School named MauriAnna Carannante and Tony Zhang as its students of the month for the month of January.

Each month, FAHS selects two students who exemplify qualities valued in a Fleetwood student. For January, MauriAnna Carannante and Tony Zhang were awarded that honor, both having distinguished themselves through heavy participation in school activities.

Carannante plans to attend a four-year university for music education. She is involved in National Art Honor Society, Yearbook, Science Olympiad, Rho Kappa Historical Honor Society, and many music groups, including Band, Chorus, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Pit Orchestra, and county and district groups. She also volunteers at Fleetwood Community Theater.

Zhang plans to pursue computer science at Johns Hopkins University. He is involved in Math Club, National History Day Club, Chess Club, Academic Challenge, Science Olympiad, Computing Club, National Honor Society, Rho Kappa Historical Honor Society, and he participates in Orchestra, Band, Marching Band, Pit Orchestra, and the Keystone Math Symposium. Outside of school, Zhang volunteers at the Fleetwood Library and assists local businesses with technology.

Carannante says she admires her grandfather, saying “he is always friendly to people” and that he has “put so much passion into the things he loves.”

Zhang says he admires his cousin, saying “he taught me everything I know about math and computer science.”

Carannante and Zhang represent the wide range of academic, extracurricular, and community involvement that characterizes a Fleetwood student. Their selection as students of the month demonstrates their commitment to FAHS and the broader Fleetwood community.
