Boys’ Soccer Looks for Repeat Season

In 2009, The Fleetwood High School boys’ soccer team was no stranger to title runs. After clinching the division title, Berks County title, and District 3 AA title, and after making a long journey into the PIAA Class AA tournament, the Tigers return this season to reclaim their crown. But It will not be all that simple.

The boys will have to battle it out this season without All-Berks County selections Carter Stein, Matt Geidner, Adam Berish, and Berks County Player of the Year, All-State selection, and Regional All-American Jeff Turner. Although the Tigers lost a large and very talented senior class, senior co-captain Ethan McGlinsey says, “This year’s team has potential.”

The team does have some returning greats: All-County midfielder/defender Pablo Nunez, All-Division midfielder/defender Ethan McGlinsey, and All-Division goalkeeper Eric Houghton. These boys, along with junior captain Danny Lopez, will look to lead the way into another successful season.

The squad will look to remain competitive among Berks II rivals Daniel Boone, Conrad Weiser, Twin Valley, and Muhlenberg, and so far they have done just that. The Tigers currently stand at the top of division II with a record of 3-1-1 in league play and 3-3-2 overall.

Senior Pablo Nunez again has his hopes for another long post-season run in his last year here at Fleetwood. Says Nunez, “We want to be one of the top teams in the county for the third year in a row and be a threat for the county title.”  Nunez and his teammates have already recorded victories over Twin Valley, Muhlenberg, and Conrad Weiser, and they will look for many more to come.

With nine games still remaining in the regular season, the boys’ soccer team still has a way to go, but with plenty of talent out on the field, their expectations for the season will remain high.
