After last year’s end-of-season win over Kutztown, there was a lot of hope for the 2011 FAHS football team. Things began to look even better when Fleetwood received 11 new varsity players due to a cooperative sponsorship with Oley Valley.
“The addition of Oley to the team was huge, and they are a bunch of great guys,” said junior wide receiver Steve Hilborn. “We needed the depth they brought, and we are happy they are a part of the family.”
Oley played for Central Catholic last season, so they bring a lot of experience with them.
So far this season, the football team has shown some of that depth, but they have not been able to turn it into a win. In the season opener against Octorara, quarterback Corey Unger threw for 236 yards and rushed for 107. Wide receiver Steve Hilborn had six receptions for 142 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown reception.
But even with impressive numbers, the Tigers still lost to Octorara 38-13.
At Donegal, Fleetwood took the early lead when Unger threw a six yard touchdown pass to Tyler Emge, but it went downhill from there. Less than two minutes later, the Indians evened the score. The game ended 45-7 with Fleetwood on the losing end.
When Annville-Cleona came to town, the Tigers gave the Little Dutchmen a run for their money. After scoring the final touchdown with 1:12 left in the game, the team went for the two-point conversion, but the pass was overthrown and Fleetwood lost 28-27.
“The season started off slow, but the Annville-Cleona game gave us some motivation,” junior quarterback Corey Unger said.
Quarterback Corey Unger and wide receiver Steve Hilborn are among the top players in the county. Hilborn set school records in the game against Annville-Cleona with 10 catches and 140 receiving yards.
“I think, if we build on our strengths, we can have success this season and pick up some key wins,” Hilborn said.
