During the 2012-2013 school year, Fleetwood athletics excelled in many sports and improved on past years.

During this year, not only did many teams experience successful seasons, Fleetwood students also showed a lot of school pride by attending many games as Superfans.

During the fall, the boys’ soccer team won their division and made both County playoffs as well as district playoffs. The team went 9-1 in their division and had an overall record of 13-6-1.

The team was led by a strong senior group of Aaron Nelson, Mitch DuCoin, Mark McGarry, Steve Dunkle, Dan Hawkins, and Justin Dantas.

The girls’ soccer team had a memorable year; they also won their division.

The girls’ team beat an always powerful Wilson team 2-1 in the Berks County final. The team finished with a 17-3-1 year. The Berks County champions were led by seniors Hannah Stump, Hannah Perone, Maureen McGarry, and goalie Madison Hileman.

The football team tied the record for most Fleetwood wins in a season with a total of three. Their final record was 3-7. They improved from last year, and the team as a whole seems to be moving in the right direction.

The Girls Volleyball team also had a successful season, going 10-7 and making the county playoffs.

The winter sport teams also experienced success.  The girls’ basketball team went 18-6 and made it to the semifinals of the Berks County playoffs as well as a district run. The boys’ basketball team improved a lot from a 3-18 record last year to an 8-13 record this year.  The organization looks to be on the right path under new coach Terry Sitler. The basketball teams also won the sportsmanship award for the county.

The spring sports teams also had very good seasons.  The boys’ tennis team made it to the county semi-finals with an overall record of 13-5.  Senior Christian Boyer and sophomore Tom Paganelli made it to districts in doubles.

The baseball team had a disappointing season after winning the county championship last year but still tied for second in the division and had an overall record of 10-9.

The boys’ volleyball team made it to the quarterfinals of districts and finished with a 10-8 record.

Members of the track and field teams also excelled with Cyre Virgo winning first in Nationals in the High Jump along with first in districts and counties. Morgan Shigo also placed second in discus and shot put in districts.

For a school as small as Fleetwood, most sports teams experienced a lot of success this year.

With almost every sport having a winning record or improving off of past years, the future of Fleetwood sports programs is bright.
