Flappy Bird Flaps Away

Flappy Bird is an Android and Apple game created for phones or iPods by Dong Nguyen. It is a simple game in which players have to tap the screen of their devices to make a bird fly. The bird has to fly under or over tubes, gaining points for each set of tubes he successfully clears.

“I used to be obsessed with Flappy Bird,” junior Mitch Kinek said.

“I love Flappy Bird,” junior Joe Kinek said.

“It’s a very addicting game,” junior Matt Hook said.

Flappy Bird made news on 9 February 2014, when the game was mysteriously taken off of the App Store. The game’s 50 million users were upset, but they were able to keep playing the game because they had already downloaded it. First time players, however, could no longer download the game.

“I’m sorry ‘Flappy Bird’ users, 22 hours from now I will take ‘Flappy Bird’ down. I cannot take this anymore,” creator Nguyen said in one of his tweets.

Nguyen said that the removal had nothing to do with legal issues. He said that people are overusing his game, but what does that mean?

Many have confessed to having addiction issues with the game.

“When I first started playing it, I got addicted to it a little bit because I just wanted to keep getting my score higher and higher.  It is such an amusing game,” sophomore Gina Esposto said.

She is only one of over 50 million people who played the game daily.

“I think that it was sad to see it get deleted,” junior Gary Gabriel said.

Flappy Bird is not the only game Dong Nguyen has created. He has many other games on the App Store, all of which are simple yet difficult, quite like Flappy Bird.

Some people are selling devices with Flappy Bird downloaded on it over the Internet for insanely high prices, some reaching $1,000! Although it might be crazy, people just cannot get enough of it.

For now, Flappy Bird is off the App Store. Will it ever fly again? No one knows, but for now those that have it downloaded continue to enjoy it, while those who do not have it should be thankful for avoiding a possible addiction.
