Both Fleetwood’s boys’ and girls’ soccer teams have qualified for District Playoffs. The boys’ team posted a 17-2 record between the regular season and County Playoffs, while the girls went 16-1-3.
Neither team was able to capture a County championship this year, as both teams were eliminated in the semifinals.
“In order to get back on track, the team has to reignite the spark they had during the regular season,” team captain Nick Matteo said.
“It’s important to stay positive and move together as a team,” midfielder Zach Wanner said.
The team got off to a good start in their pursuit of a second straight District title when they defeated Palmyra 1-0 in the first round. Junior Jeff Heffner scored the game’s only goal to give Fleetwood the victory. They followed that with a 4-1 win against Berks Catholic, with all four of Fleetwood’s goals being scored in the second half.
The girls’ team was also looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss in Counties. They started off on the right foot. A 2-0 victory over Lancaster Mennonite, with both goals scored by Junior Kortney Rentschler, and a 3-1 victory against Manheim Central have pushed them into the semifinals.
The end goal for both teams is to perform well enough in Districts to qualify for State Playoffs. In order to do so, the teams must finish third or better in Districts.
“The team’s chemistry is one its biggest strengths. We need to work together and finish our shots,” goalie Kyle Keirstead said.
With a trip to Hersheypark Stadium on the line, both of Fleetwood’s soccer teams have to deliver at least one more win to extend their season into States.
