After months of hard work, the cast and crew of Fleetwood’s production of The Wizard of Oz carried out the play from Thursday, 14 April, to Sunday, 17 April.
The show was only made possible after countless hours of preparation. The Wizard of Oz featured four main characters. Senior Juliet Cornell played the lead role and starred as Dorothy. She was accompanied by seniors Aaron Dewald, who played the Scarecrow, and Tyler Redding, who portrayed the Lion, along with junior Mike Favata as the Tinman.
Shortly after the cast was announced over the winter, their work began to make the show a success. It was only after a tremendous amount of effort, including “Tech Week,” which is the week that precedes the show, that the show could be performed.
The show debuted that Thursday for senior citizens and for the hearing-impaired. That show preceded a three-day stretch in which the play was enacted three times. The cast performed shows on the evenings of Friday the fifteenth and Saturday the sixteenth at 7:00 p.m.. Oz’s finale took place the next day at 2: 00 p.m.
A unique feature to this year’s play was its use of a student as the choreographer. Sophomore Maya Evans helped to arrange all of the dancing routines in the show. Each of the main characters’ personalities were reflected through the choreography.
Fleetwood’s production of The Wizard of Oz also featured students from elementary schools across the district, who portrayed the munchkins in Oz.
“I think the play went very well,” senior Ben Reed said. Reed played the Wizard in the musical. The Wizard of Oz marked Reed’s first performance in one of the high school’s plays.
Reed said he valued the time he shared with the rest of the cast and crew while working on the play.
“I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a unique experience,” Reed said.
