Two Fleetwood Area High School Students were honored as October Students of the Month for their hard work and dedication to the school and community. The October 2019 honorees are Andrew Slusser and Yanling Chen.

Andrew Slusser is viewed as an incredible role model and conscientious student at Fleetwood. He participates in tennis, soccer, basketball, FBLA, Science Olympiad, Student Council, and band. Andrew believes he was chosen as Student-of-the-Month because he is a nice person and treats everybody respectfully.

Andrew excels in the core subjects of math and science and hopes to use them in college as he studies Chemical Engineering. Andrew’s hobbies include spending time with family and playing soccer. He intends on playing soccer in college.

Andrew’s greatest inspiration is his mother.

“My mother inspires me because she always tries to make sure that I am responsible for everything I do,” Slusser said. “I can’t say enough that my mom has helped me to be who I am today.”

Andrew believes that anyone who would like to be a Student-of-the-Month should exemplify the good qualities of a student by being punctual, responsible, and respectful to all.

Yanling Chen represents all of the great qualities a Fleetwood Tiger should have. She is involved at Fleetwood and participates in tennis, Science Olympiad, Relay-for-Life, National Honor Society, Rho Kappa, and Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

Yanling believes she was chosen as a Student-of-the-Month because of her demonstration of PRIDE as a student and leader. Yanling’s greatest subject in school is science, and she intends on studying Neuroscience or Biology in college. Yanling enjoys drawing, cooking and playing tennis for fun.

Yanling’s greatest inspirations are her grandparents.

“They inspire me because of their wisdom and courage,” Chen said.  “They were able to move their family to America and sacrifice their life in China so that their grandchildren could get a better education. They also inspire me because they are able to solve any obstacles that come their way.”

She advises her peers to get out of their comfort zone, be active members of the school, and show PRIDE in their actions in order to become the next Student-of-the-Month.

Both of these students come to school with enthusiasm to learn and a desire to exceed expectations.
