Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Representative, wore a seemingly controversial white dress to the 2021 Met Gala. The red lettering written on the back stated ¨Tax the Rich.¨ Many people loved and admired her dress, while others deplored the message and the medium.
Ocasio-Cortez has spent much of her career trying to get the point across on how government needs to cut down on the amount of taxes put on citizens.
AOC defeated Joe Crowleyin in 2018, which resulted in very mixed reactions from voters. She believes that it is not fair for the wealthier citizens to shortchange the government with their contribution.
Ocasio-Cortez has always advertised the slogan “Tax the Rich” on merchandise and throughout social media to promote her ideas.
AOC believes that the wealthy should be taxed at a much higher rate than lower income or middle class citizens, at about 60% to 70%.
¨Ms. Ocasio-Cortez may have succeeded in putting on display an issue at the core of what Democrats are pushing for in the reconciliation bill they are trying to pass by the end of the month,¨ The New York Times argued.
Many have stated that Alexandria wearing the dress is a sign that she is willing to fight for the people. At the Met Gala event, many people believed that it was brilliant for AOC to wear her dress without considering the negative opinions that she may receive. This was AOC’s first Met Gala, despite being invited to the previous events.
Many viewers and attendees were surprised that she made an appearance this year. AOC will definitely go down in history with her iconic dress as someone prepared to be both famous and infamous.

AOC: “Tax the rich”

The “rich” meaning anyone who makes over $218k per year pay 40% of the total US Federal Income Tax revenue according to the IRS. Anyone making less than $87k per year account for 13% of the income tax revenue.

On the same hand, why do we care if anyone shortchanges the Federal Government? Taxing the rich more does not help the middle class at all. If you want to help ordinary Americans economically, abolish income tax. Let the working class keep their money.
Do not forget that AOC, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren are the rich. They can survive tax raises, but the middle class cannot. Anytime million dollar corporations experience tax raises, the costs for labor in their companies go up, the costs of their products go up, and these costs are passed off to the consumer. This is called inflation and devalues the dollar. Basic economics.
