On 7 May 2022, Thomas Schappell, senior at FAHS, competed in the regional competition for National History Day (NHD) Club. The competition took place at the University of Scranton. Schappel placed second and proceeded to advance to states.

For the competition, Schappell and his fellow competitors were asked to create a documentary covering certain events in history. Schappell titled his documentary, ¨Czechoslovakia in the Early 20th Century.¨

This documentary, as the name implies, is about the history of Czechoslovakia from the events leading to the creation of the country, up to when it was destroyed in 1938. The documentary took months to write, research, edit, and produce.

¨It felt good to have something to show for the efforts of the club since, sadly, I was the only person able to submit a project because of moving dates due to Covid,¨ Schappell said.

Other members of the NHD Club include Jay Molleca, Ailing Chen, Megan Stone, and Ryan Flood. Fleetwood teacher Mr. Todd Weiss is the advisor of the club.

¨I would recommend joining the National History Day Club because you will get to work with others and learn about parts of history that are really interesting. The competitions, from what I have seen, are fun and informational because of all the projects you can view. You also can meet people that have similar interests to yourself,¨ Schappell said.

Along with NHD, Schappell is also involved in Academic Challenge, Science Olympiad, Computer Club, Math Club, Model UN, and the Unofficial Physics Club
