Hear ye, hear ye!
On the 18 March, Mr. Marc Walter, a high school English teacher, took a collection of his students to see Twelfth Night, a show that was being performed at The Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre.
He took many of his classes, a mix of freshmen and seniors. There was enough room for 45 students at $25 a student, which covered the ticket, the bus ride, and a snack for the ride home after the show.
This was the second annual trip made, and this is Mr. Walter’s second year as a teacher. Walter thought there should be a unique way to correlate his class with what they were learning and seeing. As they read a Shakespearian play, they were also to observe one acted out.
Once the Bieber bus dropped the group off in the morning in Philly, they started the trip finding food somewhere in town. A recommendation of Walter’s was the Almaz Café. The café is an Ethiopian one, and the seniors who ate with him had a great experience of a different culture of food, and it was agreed the place was terrific.
After all the groups were stuffed and content, they rejoined at the theater, where they were seated and watched a live performance of a Shakespearean play. Walter says the company’s plays are always done rather well.
As a teacher, Walter believes that, although reading the plays is good for the students, seeing them acted out is no comparison, and so it is a real treat to go and do.
“I really wanted to provide a unique experience for the students that they will always remember as part of their high school adventure,” Walter said.
There is a limit of 45 students per year, but sometimes seats are available. Even if students are not in Walter’s class, they are invited to attend the trip in the years to come.
“No one who has gone has been disappointed,” Walter said. “I hope it stays that way!”
