The Fleetwood Area High School Golf team’s improvement from last season was highlighted by three senior leaders this year.

The golf team surpassed their record from last season by one match this year. The Golf team is led by Trent Gerhringer, Jake Hess, and Zach Sell. The team is coached by study hall monitor Mr. Matt Kellet. Hess describes his coach as “a down-to-earth guy who is very generous and relatable.”

Participating on the golf team consists of practices on Mondays and Wednesdays, which are either a day at the driving range or a practice round at Rich Maiden. The golf matches are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The courses the team has played this year include Rich Maiden, Black Wood, Willow Hollow, Flying Hills, and Reading Country Club.

Golf is a fun sport and provides a challenge. Golf isn’t all about ability. Much of it is a mind game.

“I have to hit the right shots at the right times and control myself without losing my cool after a bad shot,” Hess said.

Hess has expressed the bonding aspect of golf, which seems a little different than other sports.

“The senior class really tries to bond with the freshman; golf brings us all closer,” Hess said.

Hess has been on the golf team for three years, and the best part has been seeing the major improvement in his game over the years. Senior year, by far, was his best, as he was the number one or two guy going into matches, reached the county tournament, and just missed districts by two strokes.

“Playing with two of my best friends at counties was definitely my highlight of the season,” Hess said.

Although the fourteen-man team might not have been the most victorious team this year, they built relationships with each other and had a fun season.
