Fleetwood Area High School students involved in the Science Olympiad team competed on Thursday, March 17, at the Regional competition. With thirteen students competing, Fleetwood placed eighth overall.
The Regional competition has twenty-three events in total, where students compete in pairs or a group of three.
There are testing events, project events, or hybrid events (a combination of the first two).
Since each student competes in multiple events, the competition can get chaotic, which only adds to the excitement.
“The kids are running around the campus trying to get to each of the events. The food is great, and the coaches are making sure that everything is going well with the team. It’s really a great time!” Science Olympiad coach Mr. Damien King said.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Regional competition was canceled in 2020 and held virtually in 2021. This year, the team had to work with one another while studying for tests and making projects in order to get the job done.
At the competition, eighteen teams hope to score in the top five to advance to the state competition.
Even though Fleetwood did not reach that goal, the team was still able to medal in six events and reached near the top four in other events.
