In light of recent events, rapper Kanye West has faced much backlash and criticism over a multitude of comments he has recently made. Kanye (who is now referred to as Ye after the process of a legal name change) is certainly not a new figure in the media spotlight.
As early as 2005, Ye started down the path that has only continued to develop today.
When participating in a fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Katrina, West argued that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”
In 2009, West was once again in the media spotlight for a comment he made during the MTV Video Music Awards in the middle of a speech by winner Taylor Swift.
“Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish, but Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time,” West said.
As for the recent comments, West took a stand on a variety of issues.
One of the most recent was a slew of anti-Semitic statements in which West seemed to allege a Jewish conspiracy against him.
According to Newsweek, “Ye debuted a ‘White Lives Matter’ T-shirt at his Yeezy Season 9 show during Paris Fashion Week.”
While on a recording session of the podcast “Drink Champs,” hosted by rapper N.O.R.E, West also questioned the legitimacy of the conviction for George Floyd’s murderer.
“The average person probably shouldn’t [say this stuff] because it’s definitely wrong, but I’ve been a Kanye fan for a long time, so I will continue to listen to his music and support him. Although I don’t support the comments he said, I support what he has done for the music industry,” FAHS senior Jeffrey Brown said.
“I know he lost a lot of fans, people that I know, dropping him and his music entirely just because of what he’s done and what he’s said,” FAHS junior Jackson Kessler said. “I used to look up to him as influential, not so much recently.”
West has once again become entangled within the media as a result of his recent controversies.
