For the first time in over 40 years, the Fleetwood Area High School boys’ basketball team has won a division championship. This was accomplished due to their outstanding teamwork and dedication to their peers.
“I’d say the game started off difficult. It was close through the first quarter, but we went on a huge run in the second quarter and went into halftime confident. Once we found our rhythm, it was much easier,” Fleetwood basketball player Aiden Gorman said.
The championship game was played on February 3rd, 2022, against Brandywine High School. The score was 55-36, and it solidified the Division III championship. This was the Tigers’ first title since 1979.
Most of the Fleetwood boys’ basketball team have been playing with each other since they were kids.
“The team chemistry this year has to be the best I’ve ever had in any sport ever. We have been playing with each other since 5th/6th grade, and we spent all summer playing pick-up games and working together to gradually get better! They’re definitely a great group of guys. I wouldn’t want to win with anyone else,” teammate Jake Karnish said.
Immediately after the win, students and parents stormed the courts. It was an unforgettable moment for the team.
“I am extremely happy about this win. It was a huge game for our program and our school. It feels good to be able to make history within our basketball team and our school, since Fleetwood isn’t known for basketball,” Fleetwood basketball player William Ryan said.
This was a huge feat for the Tigers, and they don’t plan to stop in the upcoming seasons.
